The universe, and indeed life itself, has two dimensions. One is matter, and the other is consciousness (conscious energy). Both exist on different planes and produce different outcomes.
Meditation or spirituality alone cannot bring economic prosperity to a nation. For a country to advance economically, it needs industrial development, scientific innovations, progress in mathematics, science, arts, and other fields of knowledge. However, if we seek peace in society, joy in life, and true happiness, then the material dimension alone is not enough. For that, we must cultivate and refine the second dimension of life—consciousness.
Since ancient times, India has been a remarkable confluence of both matter and consciousness. This is one of the reasons why people from all over the world have been attracted to India. Even if some were drawn by the desire to exploit its wealth, their attraction itself indicates that there was much here to be gained. That wealth had been created, earned, and nurtured through the efforts and achievements of its people.
Today, it is rare to find individuals who are both spiritually evolved and materially prosperous. Those who possess material abundance are often not truly happy or fulfilled.
The history of the United States spans only about 400 years, yet it has become one of the most prosperous nations in the world. At the same time, it is often described as one of the most troubled or unhappy societies because its focus has largely been on material progress. India became great because it successfully demonstrated a harmonious integration of both matter and consciousness. Today, we must understand what true greatness really means.
Greatness cannot be achieved through conflict, slogans, agitation, noise, or empty rhetoric. Greatness demands immense effort and discipline—spiritual practice for inner growth and hard work for material progress.
If we genuinely wish to make India great, we must first strive to make ourselves great, for the greatness of India depends upon the greatness of its people. If Indians themselves are not great, how can India be great?
This land has produced many extraordinary individuals. India has been the cradle of spirituality, science, mathematics, and music. It was because of such people that India attained greatness. Even today, we need individuals of that caliber. If such people emerge, India will be great once again; otherwise, it will not. Then we may be able to say that India was great in history, but we will not be able to say with conviction that India is great today.
